Abstract

The paper explores the intersection between gender, race and the relationship between man and god that is negotiated in Goethe's Iphigenia of Tauris. Thus, dimensions of difference, which have already been widely discussed in academic research, yet seldom in their interdependence, are considered. Based on the female figure, the paper investigates, if Iphigenia is not only prefigured as a representative of rebellious femininity - as research suggests - but also constructed according to a white norm, that makes her an icon of white femininity. In focusing on the interweaving between gender and race, the paper argues that the female process of self-empowerment does not overcome a cultural asymmetry, but presupposes it.
