Abstract

There is no official record for imprisonment for default of payment in Germany. That means an important criminal justice topic remains among the dark figure of enforcement. Empirical studies are often based on small samples and show prisoners with bad conditions regarding social life, financial situation and health issues. The article at hand analyses data for all prisoners in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania for the years 2014-2017. The data render it possible to describe all those imprisoned for default of payment, compare them to other prisoners and to illustrate groups of typical imprisoned fine-defaulters, using cluster analysis.
