Abstract

Many diseases can nowadays be cured and many more can at least be alleviated. The possibility for women who are affected by pre-existing health problems to become pregnant and give birth to a child expresses the achievements of modern medicine and is also of great psychological benefit. In rare cases, physicians have to advise against pregnancy and sufficient contraception is necessary. This decision must always be made on an individual basis, is often a temporary but sometimes a permanent measure, and is always the result of an interdisciplinary decision. Detailed medical history and thorough diagnostic workup, strict adherence to periconceptional interventions such as vaccination or blood pressure control, and in-depth health counseling are the pillars of healthcare concepts for women with pre-existing diseases who wish to become pregnant. This article summarizes important information on pre-existing diseases frequently seen in daily practice. Physicians should know and remember this information, since confrontation with this issue is frequent and often unexpected, and physicians should be able to give a first assessment without reading up first.
