Abstract

Aim of the work Multiple studies were able to show that physical activity helps to mitigate cancer therapy related side effects. Especially in the field of oncology rehabilitation, the knowledge on beneficial effects is steadily developing. This paper reviews the literature on exercise intervention studies in oncology rehabilitation clinics. Methods The scientific database Pubmed and the, Colloquiums in Rehabilitation Sciences of the German statutory pension insurance scheme were searched for exercise intervention studies conducted in the setting of a rehabilitation clinic between 2006 and January 2018. Results The literature search revealed 13 publications on 8 different studies. These involved 5 randomized-controlled trials. In conclusion, the studies mainly showed beneficial effects on physical activity and fatigue. However, for many parameters results are still inconclusive. Conclusion In the setting of oncology rehabilitation clinics, future studies should pay attention to an objective measurement of physical activity and physical fitness, long follow-ups, a multicentre design, a personalized exercise regimen and an intensified aftercare.
