Abstract

This article attempts to substantiate the thesis - and defends it against alternative positions - that 19th-century linguistics perceives Humboldt's 'comprehensive plan of a general philosophical linguistics' (A. von Humboldt) in a fundamentally inappropriate way and de facto makes his linguistic-philosophical program disappear through this misperception. Humboldt's idea of a 'new language study' aimed at the systematic entanglement of the empirical-comparative structural analysis of a 'variety of languages' with a philosophical-anthropological reflection of the 'method of man to invent and develop language'. It is this theoretical program of a 'simultaneousness' of 'reason and experience' that disappears from the reception horizon of both 'comparative Indo-European studies' and positivist 'junggrammatic' linguistics -with consequences for the perception of Humboldt in the 20th century. The Humboldt readings are characterized by editions of his work in which, on the one hand, the grandiose undertaking of his empirical language studies was extensively redeemed, while, on the other hand, the 'Rest-Humboldt' appears as a 'linguistically dilettantising linguistic philosopher' (Borsche) who limited himself to writing introductions to unwritten grammars (Arens). In this way - according to the thesis of the paper - Ferdinand de Saussure, who in his turn was made to disappear in his reception, reserves the right to make Humboldt's idea of 'philosophical inductions about the structures of the languages of the globe' (Saussure) fruitful in his own thinking.
