Abstract

In contrast to Criminal Law, Criminology started to contribute to the study of international crimes (genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, aggression) just a few years ago. There still is a long way to go for criminology, particularly with regard to the heterogeneity of these crimes. Yet, the contribution of criminology is badly needed and appears to be indispensable since international criminal lawyers - from a theoretical viewpoint - do not doubt the necessity and effectivity of punishment and seem to ignore criminological wisdoms. This article combines previous works in the field of etiology and draws conclusions on two penological issues, which are the purpose of punishment and sentencing.
