Abstract

Recent action-theoretic work in criminology and sociology addresses the variety of criminal behavior by identifying different psychological mechanisms that lead to criminal choices. One such theory is the Model of Frame Selection (MFS). The model distinguishes between reflected-calculating choices and spontaneous behavior based on habits, strong emotions or normative commitments. Building on dual-process theories from social psychology, the MFS assumes actors' rationality to be varying across situations and derives the conditions under which actors engage in reflected decision-making. Moreover, the model takes into account actors' definition of the situation that precedes and guides the choice among action alternatives. The article introduces the MFS, distinguishes it from traditional rational choice theories of crime, and discusses its potential for the explanation of crime. In particular, we show how the model explicates the causal interplay between theoretical constructs such as moral norms, techniques of neutralization, deterrence, and self-control. Finally, we give an overview of previous applications of the theory in criminology.
