Abstract

An increasing number of traffic accidents in Germany in the late 1950s necessitated improvement in emergency medical services (EMS). In this context, in Cologne and Heidelberg, the first physician-based EMS was developed in 1957. Contemporary literature as well as many archived sources make it possible to reconstruct the early history of cologne EMS since 1957. The main principles of German EMS had been developed in these years. For example, the first detailed statistics on prehospital resuscitation provide a very interesting insight into the early years of emergency medicine.
