Abstract

In 2016, the German Bundestag has fundamentally reformed the law on sexual offences. One major reason for the political willingness to extend the existing law was an intense media campaign to introduce the so-called No means no-model. The crimes committed in Cologne on New Year's Eve and the case of Gina-Lisa Lohfink were used as an occasion to demand an improved protection of sexual self-determination. This article presents the findings of a media analysis on digitally available texts published prior to the reform. The study shows which positions were taken in the media and which discourse strategies were used to influence the legislative process.
