Abstract

A stylistic and cognitive comparison between Diderot's Encyclopedie (18th century) and the Encyclopdia Universalis (early 21st century) reveals profound linguistic differences in terms of both text structure and argumentation. The present contribution interprets the 21st century innovations as resulting from two factors new epistemological schools of thought, and the attempt to be as informative as possible, even when it comes to highly complex topics. Both trends can be illustrated on the basis of a small group of complex prepositions.
