Abstract

Language development of children with Down syndrome is impaired. So far, available evidence is inconclusive as to whether these deficits are due to the general cognitive limitations in persons suffering from this syndrome. Therefore, this study aimed to shed further light on the relationship between language and cognition in Down syndrome in the context of the German language. 28 children and adolescents aged 4;6 to 19 years took part in the study. Both language comprehension and language production were assessed. In both domains, a subgroup of subjects performed below mental age expectations. For these subjects, the observed language deficits cannot be due to their general cognitive deficits alone. An evaluation of additional influence factors did not reveal any significant correlations.
