Abstract

This article deals with a frequently observable phenomenon in recent literary and cultural studies: the metaphorization of 'text'. Starting off from Clifford Geertz' notion of 'culture as text', the idea that many cultural phenomena feature a textual structure has become widely accepted. In contrast to these tendencies of recent scholarship, this article argues in favour of the strictly linguistic nature of texts. By comparing Geertz' conception of thick description to Heidegger's analysis of Dasein, both of which refer to the notion of text as an epistemological model, it demonstrates that the metaphorization of 'text' constitutes a consequence of Kant's epistemology and can by no means be justified by a textual character of the objects it pretends to explain. On the contrary, such metaphorization tends to marginalize the specific cognitive power characteristic of texts in the proper sense of the word. inzwischen nicht alles als Text bezeichnen!
