Abstract

Physical activity during pregnancy has many positive effects on mother and child. Among many other positive effects, the risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) or, consecutively, diabetes mellitus type 2 can be minimized. It is therefore generally recommended that all pregnant women without contraindications exercise for at least 150 min per week. With regard to GDM, physical activity should preferably be performed 30 min postprandial every day, at least three days a week. Sports with little stress on joints and a low risk of falling, such as swimming or walking, are recommended. However, the reality is that many women reduce their physical activity already during, but also after pregnancy. Apart from physical reasons such as water retention or back pain, many pregnant women are particularly insecure about the type, duration, intensity and frequency of physical activity. This insecurity also exists among health professionals. Therefore, the present study is intended to provide current recommendations, selected mechanisms, but above all practical advice for implementation and motivation.
