Abstract

Background. Structured reporting in oncological radiology show advantages over conventional reports in terms of report quality and interdisciplinary communication. Objective. The current article provides an up-to-date overview of structured reporting in the context of radiological tumor staging and treatment monitoring. Methods. Scientific publications have shown that structured reports are superior to conventional free-text reports in terms of completeness, clarity, comprehensibility, and quality. Analogous results were also found for standardized treatment monitoring. The combination with radiological subspecialization in a comprehensive cancer center network (CCCN) offers the possibility to contribute to improvement of oncological patient care. At present, however, there are still methodological, personal, and IT-related limitations to implementation in routine radiological practice. Conclusion. The use of structured reporting can improve the quality of radiological reports in the context of tumor staging and treatment monitoring, and enables optimized interdisciplinary communication between oncologists and radiologists. However, there are still fundamental limitations to the implementation of this technology in daily routine.
