Abstract

Due to growing heterogeneity in German classes and the ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, dealing with individual learning abilities and creating inclusive learning environments has taken on greater significance in education. Germany is currently working towards an inclusive school system, which implies that all students share the same school in which their diverse educational needs are welcomed and taken into consideration during lessons planning. In order to create appropriate learning environments and to receive high standards for all students, differentiated knowledge of the students I individual needs is necessary. However, what specific learning difficulties special needs students in chemistry may have and what teaching concepts can be used in an inclusive setting has hardly been investigated in chemistry education. This paper describes a project, which aims in a short term to diagnose specific learning difficulties of students with special needs in chemistry classes. Since this topic has hardly been investigated in chemistry education research, the study focuses on deaf and hard of hearing students to receive detailed and specific information on a certain target group. Furthermore, the aim of the project is to develop teaching and learning material on the topic of scientific reasoning and methods of investigation, which is adapted for the needs of special education students. In the long term, it is expected that the outcome of the project can contribute to the development of inclusive chemistry education.
