Abstract

In this article we discuss whether the differentiation of universities as part of the emergence of rankings in Germany throughout the 1990s led to new social selectivity in the choice of institutions of higher education. We focus on the development in the quantitatively important fields of business and economics as well as engineering. We have analyzed data provided by the German Center for Research on Higher Education and Science Studies from the years 1993, 1996, 2000, and 2005 and have found a trend toward new inequalities in the enrollment in highly ranked universities throughout the 1990s. This, however, had set in before the newly introduced rankings became widely accepted.
