Abstract

Mg4.85Rh6Si13 was obtained from a mixture of the elements in an alumina crucible enclosed in a tantalum ampoule at 950 degrees C. The crystal structure was solved and refined from single crystal diffraction data [space group P6(3)/mmc; a = 8.709(1) angstrom, c = 22.240(1) angstrom]. The new structure type displays a three-dimensional [Rh6Si13] framework, which contains Si-4 tetrahedra and Mg-2@Si-18 polyhedra consisting of two magnesium centered truncated tetrahedra connected by a hexagonal face. The compound is a Pauli-paramagnetic metal with a high electrical resistivity.
