Abstract

The difference in crime rates between women and men is a well-known, constant trend in criminology That said, it is also a trend that has yet to be satisfactorily explained. There are very few studies that address the issue of why this gender gap is considerably larger in officially reported crime statistics than it is in self-report studies. Accordingly, to examine whether this gap could be partially attributed to a gender-specific reporting of crime, a survey was conducted among students from the University of Thessaloniki and the University of Cologne, as well as students attending vocational training centres (German: Berufsschule) in Cologne. In the survey, both the participants' self-reported experiences of victimisation and their rating of the severity of offences depicted in case vignettes were used to gain an insight into varying tendencies to report a crime depending on the offender's gender. The results showed that the act of reporting a crime did not vary along gender-specific lines in any of the three comparison groups.
