Abstract

This paper traces the historical origins and transmission of the Czech diacritical marks háček (ˇ), originally just a dot (˙), and čárka (´), first described in the treatise De Orthographia Bohemica from the early 15th century, which is traditionally attributed to Jan Hus. Rejecting previous hypotheses – such as Hebrew, Glagolitic, or Latin i-dots as sources – the study argues for an Irish origin. The Old Irish orthography uniquely combined the same two diacritics, a dot over consonants (ponc séimhithe) to mark lenition (i.e. a pronunciation of consonants deviating from their pronunciation in Medieval Latin) and a stroke over vowels (sineadh fada) to indicate vowel length. The author demonstrates that medieval Czech scholars, including Hus, could have encountered these diacritics in Latin manuscripts with Old Irish glosses, preserved in Central European monasteries founded by Irish missionaries. This hypothesis not only explains the formal and functional parallels between the Czech and Irish systems but also situates the Czech diacritics within broader European traditions of script adaptation, emphasizing the continuity and logical development of diacritical marks across languages and centuries.
