Abstract

The present study concerns the semantic and morphological properties of reflexes of the prefix *si- in Malayo-Polynesian languages in Western Indonesia, Sulawesi, and the Philippines. Forms with this prefix have various formations and functions: with action-denoting (that is, verbal) roots, they denote reciprocal, actor plural, reflexive, and comitative actor functions, among others. This study also examines possible cognates for quality-denoting (adjectival) and object-denoting (nominal) roots, kinship terms, and location words. Finally, it discusses the relationship between the prefix *si- and its possible cognates in Formosan and Oceanic languages, particularly Kavalan sim- and reflexes of Oceanic *paRi-.
