Abstract

Since the existence of the concept “intellectual”, the group of people referred to by this term have a dual relationship with the 'pueblo', or people. On the one hand, it is a group of people who differ from the rest and stand for the values of democracy while being free of certain ideologies. On the other hand, this position makes one a representative of the people in front of the government. Jean-Paul Sartre places literature as a vehicle for communication between intellectuals and the people. In this sense, the intellectual shows the people the problems of their times and causes a reaction in them. The question is, if this direct communication works, or if it just circulates inside the boundaries of a cultural elitist field, where literature as a cultural activity usually stays. Correspondent to literature as being written by intellectual authors for a cultural elite, there exist types of literature read by the “people”, like best-sellers or pop literature. The latter phenomenons are often not regarded as legitimate cultural products because of the massive dimension in which they are sold and purchased. As a perspective, the author proposes the New Argentinian Narrative as a recent literary movement where those categorizations can be analysed.
