Abstract

"Die andere Front. Presselenkung in den US-Kriegen des 20. Jahrhunderts" bietet als erstes, explizit historisches, Werk einen Überblick und eine fundierte Analyse der Medien- und Öffentlichkeitspolitik der US-Regierungen und des US-Militärs in Kriegen des 20.Jahrhunderts. Die Arbeit gliedert sich in vier große Abschnitte. Der erste behandelt die Kriege der Vorfernsehzeit, also den Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg; der zweite den Vietnamkrieg; der dritte die Grenada- und Panamainvasion; und der vierte den Golfkrieg von 1991. Darüber hinaus wird zu Beginn der Arbeit im Kapitel "Medientheoretische Ansätze" dem Leser ein wissenschaftliches Instrumentarium an die Hand gegeben, das dem interdisziplinären Ansatz der Arbeit gebührend Rechnung trägt. Im Schlusskapitel erläutert der Autor seine zentrale These, dass die Geschichte der US-Pressepolitik in Kriegen als dialektische Weiterentwicklung zu interpretieren ist, die ohne Berücksichtigung der historischen Vorbilder und deren spezifischer Rezeption nicht lesbar wäre.

Jahrhunderts" is the first historical compendium that reflects the rapidly alternating history of US media policy during war-times in the 20th. century. This book fulfils its purpose to function as a general overview for first time readers as well as an academic in-depth analysis for the universitary user. The first chapter deals with different media-theories which are used as a basic framework for the interdisciplinary approach of "Die andere Front". The structure follows a chronological order: The author covers World War I and World War II, the Vietnam-War, the Grenada- and Panamainvasion and finally the Gulf-War 1991. The conclusion draws attention to the fact, that the history of US media polices during war times is only understandable as a dialectical evolution. Without analysing the receptive elements within the long time flow of historical data - according to the central thesis of the author - there will be no sufficient interpretation of the history of media politics during war times.
