Abstract

Moses Ben Maimon (1138-1204), in der westlichen Welt als Maimonides bekannt, war nicht nur der wichtigste Philosoph und Theologe im mittelalterlichen Judentum, sondern auch ein berühmter Arzt, der am Hofe der Fatimiden und Ayyubiden in Kairo wirkte und insgesamt zehn medizinische Schriften verfasste. Eine davon ist sein Kommentar zu den Aphorismen des Hippokrates, der hier zum ersten Mal in einer vollständigen Edition des arabischen Originals vorliegt. In seinem Kommentar erweist sich Maimonides als unabhängiger Denker, der durchaus Kritik an den medizinischen Autoritäten der Antike äußert und ihnen nicht blind folgt.

Moses Ben Maimon (1138-1204), known as Maimonides in the Western world, was not only the most important philosopher and theologian in mediaeval Jewry but also a famous physician who worked at the court of the Fatimids and Ayyubids in Cairo und composed ten medical treatises. One of them is the commentary of the aphorisms of Hippocrates which is edited here for the first time in its Arabic original. In his commentary he proves to be an independent thinker who criticizes the ancient medical authorities and does not follow the m blindly.
