Abstract

Selten, aber aktueller denn je sind Studien, die sich mit der europäischen Migrationspolitik befassen und dabei den Blick auf Menschen ohne gültige Aufenthaltspapiere lenken. Die Studie zeigt am Beispiel der französischen Immigrationspolitik, welche Konsequenzen das restriktive politische Modell auf den Alltag von afrikanischen Migranten in Pariser Wohnheimen (Foyers) hat. Bis heute fristen dort zahlreiche Arbeiter ein marginalisiertes Schattendasein. Über kognitionsethnologische Verfahren eröffnet die Autorin einen neuen Blickwinkel auf die Lebenssituation afrikanischer Arbeiter in der Diaspora. Identifiziert werden nicht nur Identitätskrisen bei den direkt Betroffenen, sondern es wird gezeigt, wie ihre politische Illegalisierung soziale Kohäsion im Inneren der Wohnheime schwächt. Dabei entstehen neue Konfliktarenen, die über transnationale Räume bis in die afrikanischen Heimatdörfer reichen.

Studies that deal with European migration politics and thereby direct the attention on persons without valid residence permits are rare but more than ever an issue. This study explores, while employing the example of French immigration policy, the impact the restrictive political model has on the everyday life of African migrants in Parisian halls of residence (Foyers). To this day numerous labourers live there as marginalized members of French society. By using methods of cognitive anthropology, the author reveals a new perspective on the living conditions of African labourers in the diaspora. Not only does this study pin-point identity crisises among those directly affected but also indicates how their political illegalisation weakens their social cohesiveness within the halls of residence. Along the line new arenas of conflict arise that reach out beyond transnational spheres back to their African native villages.
