Abstract

Smell and taste sensory perceptions, as described in four sixteenth century Spanish books, have been analysed in this paper within the frame of the cognitive linguistics. The books belong to Volsciana collection which is stored in the Old Prints Section of the Jagiellonian Library. Libro de guisados, besides being a cookbook, gives a full account of services to be performed by the staff of a house; Vocabulario del humanista is a list of terms to be mastered by an educated person; Aviso de sanidad could be considered a precursory nutrition manual and Discursos de las cosas aromáticas provides a generous list of these substances. Cinnamon, which is dealt with in all of them, was chosen as the nexus term for this analysis.
