Abstract

The motif of the Mediterranean, this other heading (Derrida) on the southern shores of Europe which both rejects and includes (Tomislav Zelic), is common in contemporary literary writings of refugees. This essay draws on two novels, Bodo Kirchhoff's Widerfahrnis (2016) and Mathias Enard's Rue des voleurs (2010/2013), to outline some remarkable narratives on the Mediterranean seen as a passage between continents, a zone of conflicts between civilizations, a heterotopia, the epicentre of the unfolding migrant tragedy.
