Abstract

Tennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis describes a painful tendinosis of the common extensor origin with pain at the lateral aspect of the elbow. Clinical examination allows a reliable diagnosis. Initially, conservative treatment is recommended. Success of non-surgical treatment reaches up to 89% within 1 year after occurrence. In addition to physiotherapy and local injections various physical treatments such as shock wave, radio-, and ultrasound therapy can contribute to the relief of symptoms. In refractory cases, surgery produces good to excellent results independent of the specific technique. This article explains the development of the disease, the clinical examination, and outlines differential diagnoses as well as non-surgical and surgical options.
