Abstract

Previous scholarship has pointed out the relationship between the second and third choral songs in Seneca's Medea (301-379, 579-669) and Horace's carm. 1.3, and has further noted that the Horatian poem draws on the first book of Lucretius' De rerum natura (esp. 1.62-79). On the basis of reminiscences of Lucretius in Seneca that are not present in Horace, it can be shown that Seneca is engaging directly with Lucretius as well as Horace.
