Abstract

The updated version of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines on pericardial diseases has now been published 11 years after publication of the original document. The current 2015 ESC guidelines contain parts with little or no changes in the sections on diagnosis, differential diagnostics, pathology and pathophysiology. Substantial progress has been made in multimodal imaging, particularly by using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the assessment of pericarditis and epicarditis. The 2015 guidelines give a universal recommendation for colchicine as first line treatment for all non-malignant forms of pericarditis and pericardial effusion in addition to the shortterm use of aspirin as antiphlogistic and analgesicmedication. This recommendation is now based on several randomized and double-blind studies.
