Abstract

This paper gives a descriptive account of enclitics occupying the post-final slot of the verb in Nyakyusa (Bantu, M31). Nyakyusahas eight morphemes of the shape CV that occur in this slot: enclitic substitutives for each of the locative norm classes 16-18; a partitive and a comparative enclitic, both of which are homophonous with the substitutives of class 16; an indefinite enclitic homophonous with the substitutive of class 18, and two enclitic WH question words. Special attention is paid to the syntax of these enclitics and their uses with hosts of other categories, as well as to their semantic range, and their interaction with negation and frequent or lexicalized collocations.
