Abstract

Background. Regular physical activity before, during and after pregnancy has beneficial effects for mother and child. New American guidelines for physical activity during pregnancy recommend women to be moderately active for at least 20-30 min per day on most or all days of the week. Objective and methods. In the present article, the new recommendations for physical activity during pregnancy are outlined. Practical tips for implementation are provided. Results. Regular physical activity during pregnancy reduces the risk of several pregnancy-related conditions like excessive weight gain or gestational diabetes. Conclusion. Women with uncomplicated pregnancies should be encouraged to continue or start regular physical activity.
