Abstract

An almost forgotten acid-base theory is the definition by Soviet chemist Mikhail Usanovich, which was developed in the late 1930s, at about the same time as Lewis ' s much betterknown definition. His very broad conception demonstrated parallels between proton and electron transfers in a variety of chemical reactions, long before the principle of donors and acceptors gained a prominent role in German chemistry education. This article portrays not only the Usanovich definition itself, but also demonstrates its value as a historical context for teaching nature of science (NOS). Furthermore, the corresponding results of a study involving teacher-students are presented.
