Abstract

The present study attempts to analyze the eligibility of patient characteristics as predictors for the treatment outcome of a behavioral-therapeutic group intervention. 115 students diagnosed with ADHD participated in six sessions of an intensive group training program. The improvement of ADHD symptomatology, patients satisfaction with Training, the degree of goal attainment and the improvement of the level of functioning in everyday activities were measured and regarded as indicators of treatment outcome. Using multiple regression analysis, different predictores for therapy outcome were examined. In addition, a hierarchical cluster analysis and a discriminant analysis were conducted to distinguish between responders and non-responders. Based on the criteria for treatment outcome, the cluster analysis and the discriminant analysis reveal three different patient clusters: non-responders (N = 15), responders (N = 85) and responders with especially high therapeutic success (N = 15). Patients in the first cluster did not benefit much from the intervention, patients in the second cluster benefited to a medium extent and patients in the third cluster benefit highly from the group training program. Correlations and multiple regression analyses show that the observed patient-related variables have no predictive value for the treatment outcome. Neither age, severity of symptoms, social embedding (number of close friends), relationship to parents and siblings, gender, education level nor the occurrence of insomnia are associated with the treatment outcome. Patient characteristics are no suitable predictors for treatment outcome. This result may be due to the selected patient variables. In addition, procedural characteristics may have an influence on treatment outcome.
