Abstract

The more successful an occupational career has been between youth and mid-life, the more strongly an individual is inclined to continue it up to and beyond pension age. This continuity hypothesis is examined in a panel study, where former grammar school students of age 16 are re-interviewed at age 30, 43 and 56. Dependent variables are (1) being currently employed, (2) the importance to continue employment up to pension age, and the intention to continue employment beyond pension age (3) in the previous or (4) in a new occupation. Independent variables are the objective and subjective occupational success and leisure preferences up to age 56, and social origin as well as aspirations at age 16. The probability of being currently employed (1) increases with the objective and subjective occupational success; the intention to continue the occupational career (2-4) increases with the subjective occupational success. The continuity hypothesis is confirmed with qualifications.
