Abstract

There is increasing evidence that family presence during pediatric emergency treatment can alleviate the traumatic experience of children and parents without interfering with medical treatment. This article gives an overview of available evidence and resulting recommendations. Prerequisites for parental presence are (1) parental desire and ability to be there, (2) the parents are accompanied and supported during the procedure and (3) the medical team is prepared for and agrees to parental presence. The introduction of parental presence into clinical practice should follow a structured process involving all members of the team. The approach should be evaluated and improved by accompanying psychosocial research.
