Abstract

Aim Parental drug use can result in precarious living conditions for children. Families suffering from addiction are difficult to reach through family helping systems. Drug counselling has good chances of access, but so far it does not sufficiently take the family situation into account. The implementation of the organizational development program FITKIDS into the work of drug counselling centers aims to strengthen the healthy development of children affected. Methods The EvaFit II study evaluates the effects of FITKIDS using semi-structured, guideline-based individual interviews with addicted parents (n = 14) and their children (n = 6) who were counselled in an addiction counselling center trained by FITKIDS. Results The results show positive results regarding the living conditions of the families, e. g. with regard to social participation, communication or transfer to help systems. Discussion The child-orientation of the counselling centers, the extension of competences of the counsellors and the establishment of networks make it possible to combine drug counselling, educational counselling and child/youth welfare. The results contribute to the evidence base in drug counselling.
