Background Small cell lung cancer (SCLC), a highly aggressive solid tumor strongly associated to inhalative smoking of tobacco, shows a high response rate to chemotherapy but nevertheless has a very poor prognosis. Despite decades of intensive clinical research, it was just in the last two years that progress has been made in improving patient outcome by adding immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) atezolizumab or durvalumab to standard of care chemotherapy consisting of cis- or carboplatin and etoposide. To date, there has not been a good overview of the patient population and treatment reality. A review of existing literature shows predominantly retrospective data based on relatively small cohorts. Objectives Given the successful and constant recruitment of the prospective registry trial CRISP (Clinical Research Platform Into Molecular Testing, Treatment and Outcome of Non-Small Cell Lung Carcinoma Patients), the satellite CRISP-SCLC will prospectively collect representative data of treatment patterns and quality of life of patients in Germany with SCLC irrespective of disease stage or treatment modalities. Materials and methods In all, 800 patients with newly diagnosed SCLC will be prospectively registered. Treatment, outcome, quality of life and demographics will be continuously collected. Results The register has been recruiting patients in 177 participating centers since September 2019. Planned recruitment of 800 patients will be reached in the second quarter of 2021. An expansion of the registry is planned.
