Abstract

This master thesis deals with the case variation (dative/accusative) of the Causee within the Spanish causative construction hacer + infinitive, positing that this variation is, to some extent, driven by semantic factors. The influence of agentivity of the Causee on case marking is explored in an acceptability judgment task employing a 2x3 design and a seven-point acceptability scale. Agentivity is defined in accordance with Dowty's (1991) proto-role model and varied systematically via the semantics of the embedded verb. The statistical analysis yields no significant influence of agentivity on case alternation. Potential explanations for this outcome include challenges in systematically varying agentivity and the issue of embedded agentivity. Subsequent research is needed to conclusively determine the role of agentivity on case alternation within causative constructions.
