Abstract

The dissertation proposes a comprehensive analysis of the work by the Italian photographer Guido Guidi (Cesena, 1940), one of the most appreciated master of the New Italian Landscape School of Photography. Aim of my research was to subsume in one single study the various, scattered, and mostly non-academic reflections on his practice, with the purpose to introduce his oeuvre into the academic discourse by means of a unitary overview. The dissertation includes both published and unpublished materials from Guidi’s huge archive. The photographs have been selected and organized according to a thematic principle, that arose from the combination of three factors: Guidi’s practice, medium specificity, and everyday life theories. This interpretive key brings into focus what I called Guidi’s Method – his peculiar way of conceiving and practicing photography as an act performed every day and on everyday materials, deeply anchored into the boundaries of medium specificity. The dissertation structure comprehends an Introduction followed by two Parts. In the Introduction I provide a definition and a concise history of the concept of Everyday Life, with special attention to its relationship to photography. Then, in the First Part called An Everyday Grammar of Photography, I study Guidi’s work on the basis of four categories that define photography medium specificity: Framing, Repetition, Index, and Mistake. Finally, in the Second Part, I focus on what I called Guidi’s Ethos of Looking Down, as to say, how his vision of the world is reflected by his choices of what and how to photograph. The notions that structured this Part are Waste and Humus – two everyday materials, that figure among the most recurring subjects of his work.
