Abstract

This thesis comprises three essays on returns to human capital in asset management. The first essay (Cici, Gehde-Trapp, Goericke, and Kempf, 2016, "What They Did in Their Previous Lives: The Investment Value of Mutual Fund Managers' Experience Outside the Financial Sector") investigates whether industry-specific human capital acquired by managers of equity mutual funds has investment value. The second essay (Goericke, 2016, "Do Generalists Profit from the Fund Families' Specialists? Evidence from Mutual Fund Families Offering Sector Funds") analyses whether there are spillover effects for human capital within mutual fund families. The third essay (Goericke, 2017, "Does Economic University Education Matter for Fund Performance?" examines if a university degree in an economic field provides managers of equity mutual funds with an advantage.
