Abstract
This cumulative dissertation explores the journal-based publication landscape of adult education research, with a specific focus on the positioning of scholars from countries of the so-called Global South. Against the backdrop of an increasingly standardized publication culture shaped by open access and commercial publishing actors, the study applies bibliometric methods and content-analytical approaches to examine the visibility, topical priorities, and publication strategies of researchers in marginalized contexts. The work comprises three interrelated sub-studies that differentiate between mainstream, non-mainstream, and predatory publication spaces. A multidimensional theoretical framework integrates sociological neo-institutionalism, world-systems theory, and postcolonial perspectives to interrogate structural inequalities in global knowledge production. The study develops and applies a decolonially sensitive bibliometric approach that accounts for the epistemic and systemic exclusions embedded in dominant indexing and citation systems. Findings reveal a persistent imbalance in the visibility of Global South scholars, who are underrepresented in core journals, address distinct thematic concerns, and frequently rely on alternative or vulnerable publication outlets. The dissertation contributes to the critical examination of academic dependency and the reproduction of global hierarchies in adult education research. It offers conceptual and methodological impulses for advancing a more inclusive and equitable scholarly communication system within and beyond the field.
