Abstract

This thesis is concerned with the licensing conditions of negative polarity items (NPIs) in negative and non-negative contexts. NPIs are, generally speaking, (groups of) words that are licensed in the scope of negative operators. NPIs exhibit a large amount of variation with respect to what particular licensing contexts they can appear in, rang¬ing from NPIs that require the strongest type of negation (not) to be licensed to NPIs that can appear in questions, which are not straightforwardly a negative environment. The goal of this thesis was to gain a better empirical overview of the licensing condi¬tions of NPIs in German. In two experiments, 60 German NPIs were tested in different li-censing conditions in order to classify them into groups of superstrong, strong, weak, and superweak NPIs according to their distributional patterns. Secondly, a corpus study investigated the licensing contexts of 31 German verbal NPIs. The corpus data revealed a wider range of licensing contexts than previously described in the litera¬ture, first and foremost contrastive licensing contexts that do not exhibit any form of nega-tive operator that could license the NPIs. On the ground of this data, I argue for the assumption of a secondary, pragmatic licensing mechanism via negative implica¬ture that can explain the presence of NPIs in contexts without any overt licensor.

Translated abstract:	Abstract Language Diese Doktorarbeit befasst sich mit den Lizensierungsbedingungen von negativen Polaritätselementen (engl. „negative polarity items“, NPIs) in negativen und nicht negativen Kontexten. NPIs sind Wörter oder Wortgruppen, die im Skopus von negativen Operatoren lizensiert sind. NPIs zeigen eine große Bandbreite an Variation im Hinblick darauf, in welchen spezifischen Kontexten sie erscheinen können – von NPIs, die die stärkste Form der Negation (antimorphisches "nicht") benötigen, um lizensiert zu sein, bis hin zu NPIs, die in Fragen vorkommen können, welche wiederum nicht offensichtlich negative Lizensierungskontexte darstellen. Das Ziel dieser Doktorarbeit war, einen besseren empirischen Überblick über die Lizensierungsbedingungen deutscher NPIs zu erlangen. In zwei Experimenten wurden 60 deutsche NPIs in verschiedenen Lizensierungsbedingungen getestet. Das Ziel hierbei war, die NPIs nach ihren Distributionsmustern in die Gruppen superstarke, starke, schwache und superschwache NPIs zu klassifizieren. Des Weiteren wurden die Lizensierungskontexte von 31 verbalen deutschen NPIs in einer Korpusstudie näher untersucht. Die Korpusdaten zeigten eine breitere Fächerung an Lizensierungskontexten als zuvor beschrieben, allen voran NPIs in kontrastiven Kontexten ohne jegliche negative Operatoren, welche die NPIs klassisch lizensieren könnten. Auf Basis dieser Daten argumentiere ich für die Annahme eines sekundären, pragmatischen Lizensierungsmechanismus durch negative Implikaturen, welcher das Auftreten von NPIs in Kontexten ohne overte Lizensierer erklären kann.
