Abstract
Within the last decades, research into photochromic molecules and their applications has grown steadily. Spiropyrans are among the most versatile and frequently used substance classes in this field. A key feature is the high derivatisation potential of the spiropyran which enables the modification of photochromic properties as required. Upon the photoisomerization of the spiropyran to the corresponding merocyanine, a high change in dipole moment can be observed. This change is desirable for several applications. In this thesis, the electronic influence of substituents at different position of the spiropyran motive onto the photophysical properties are elucidated. Additionally, it is tested if the dipole moment changes can be utilised to alter the cis/trans configuration of small, proline-based peptides. These two targets are investigated via a combination of UV/Vis- and NMR-spectroscopy supported by fundamental DFT-Calculations.
