Abstract
The challenge of ultimately replacing Pt with the cheaper and more abundant Ni in optoelectronic applications is approached from multiple angles. The effect of heavy phosphine analogue ancillary ligands PnPh3, Pn = As and Sb, on the photophysical properties of tridentate, cyclometalated pincer complexes is explored as one strategy to enhance or facilitate their triplet emission. To elucidate the structure-property-relationships in doubly cyclometalated complexes [M(C^N^C)(PnPh3)] (M = Pd, Pt), UV/vis absorption and emission spectroscopy as well as transient absorption spectroscopy are used among others. For the complexes [Pd(C^N^C)(PnPh3)], the investigation additionally includes the optimization and generalization of their synthesis and exploration of their reactivity. Concurrently, a second approach is explored, probing the ability of the strongly sigma-donating, monodentate perfluorophenyl ligand to promote phosphorescence from Ni(II) complexes in place of (double) cyclometalation.
