Abstract
Die Globalisierung hat als maßgeblicher Transformationsprozess der Gegenwart Effekte auf alle Bereiche gesellschaftlichen Lebens, auch auf den Kunstbetrieb und die kuratorische Praxis: Deren Standorte, AkteurInnennetze und die kulturelle Reichweite der Exponate wurden erweitert. Die Folgen der Expansion werden verstärkt seit zehn Jahren in Ausstellungen thematisiert. Wegen der Relevanz kuratorischer Diskurse für die Wissenschaft stehen Themenausstellungen mit global verflochtener zeitgenössischer Kunst im Mittelpunkt der Studie. Sie betrachtet vier Ausstellungen aus den Jahren 2010 bis 2013 im deutschsprachigen Ausstellungsbetrieb in Europa, die „globale Kunst“ in Relation zur Globalisierung setzen. Im Fokus ist die kuratorische Verhandlung - mittels künstlerischer Bewegtbildarbeiten und Fotografie - von globalen Kino- und Musikkulturen als wichtigen Feldern der Globalisierung. Ziel ist es, deren komplexe kulturelle Dimensionen neu zu verstehen und den Ethnozentrismus westlicher Ausstellungen zu hinterfragen. Die These ist, dass solche Themenausstellungen Zugänge zur Globalisierung über die transkulturelle Aneignung des Imaginären der Globalisierung bieten. Ferner kann das Imaginäre raumtheoretisch verortet werden. Ausstellungen definiere ich als „Imaginationsräume“, die sich in kuratorischen Sphären der „Exhibitionscapes“ (in Anlehnung an Arjun Appadurai) bewegen. Mit Blick auf die imaginäre Dimension von Bildkulturen bietet die Studie eine theoretische Grundlage für die postkolonial geforderte Methodenerweiterung der Ausstellungsanalyse. Die Dissertation verdeutlicht, dass Globalisierung trotz Machtasymmetrien und Homogenisierung auch Transkulturalität mit sich bringt und kulturelle, aber auch soziale Differenz als intensive Nähe in contact zones verdichtet. Als solche bieten die Themenausstellungen Ausblicke auf einen Globalismus der Ferne und der Nähe, in dem die Imagination ihr kritisches Potential für Multiperspektiven auf eine verwobene Welt entwickeln kann.

| Translated abstract: | Abstract Language As a very significant transformation process of the present, globalization has effects on all areas of social life, including the art world and curatorial practice: its locations, actor networks and the cultural reach of the exhibits have been expanded. The consequences of the expansion have increasingly been addressed in exhibitions over the last decade. Due to the relevance of curatorial discourses for academic purposes, exhibitions with globally entangled contemporary art are the focus of the current study. It deals with four exhibitions from the years 2010 to 2013 in the German-speaking parts of Europe, which put “global art” in relation to globalization. The focus is on the curatorial negotiation - by means of artistic moving images and photography - of global cinema and music cultures as important fields of globalization. My aim is to re-understand their complex cultural dimensions and to question the ethnocentrism of Western exhibitions. The results are that such themed shows offer access to globalization through the transcultural appropriation of the imaginary of globalization. Furthermore, the imaginary can be determined with regard to spatial theory. In my study, I define exhibitions as “spaces of imagination” that move in the curatorial spheres of the “Exhibitionscapes” (in the style of Arjun Appadurai). With regard to the imaginary dimension of visual cultures, the study offers a theoretical basis for the postcolonial expansion of the method of exhibition analysis. The dissertation makes it clear that globalization, despite power asymmetries and homogenization, also brings with it transculturality and condenses cultural, but also social difference as intensive proximity in contact zones. As such, themed shows offer an outlook on a globalism of the near and the far in which the imagination can develop its critical potential for multi-perspectives on an interwoven world. English |
