Abstract

The dissertation critically analyzes cases of possible lexical, phraseological and thematic Indo-European poetic inheritance in the odes of Pindar and Bacchylides. In the first part of the study (chapter 1), the author focuses on 115 poetic compounds, which are compared with compounds or poetic expressions attested in other Indo-European languages (mainly, Indo-Iranian). In the second part (chapters 2–4), the author collects, classifies and compares the poetic collocations (i.e. combinations of words) of three key-concepts, namely: ‘glory' (chapter 2), ‘excellence' (chapter 3), and ‘poetry/poetic word' (chapter 4). The collocations are compared with those of Indo-Iranian terms, which either semantically overlap with the Greek ones (chapter 4), or are etymologically related to the Greek ones (chapters 2, 3). The author seeks to demonstrate that the comparative phraseological analysis casts light on the origin of some poetic expressions found in the corpora of the two choral lyric poets.
