Abstract

LaCoO(3) crystallizes in a slightly distorted perovskite structure. At low temperatures it features a nonmagnetic insulating ground state. With increasing temperature a thermal population of a paramagnetic excited state causes a characteristic maximum in the susceptibility data. The spin gap amounts to 180 K. With further increasing temperature the system passes through a metall-insulator transition around 500 K. The activation energy is estimated to 1200 K. The microscopic origins of these amazing features are discussed controversially. The susceptibility, the thermal expansion, the magnetostriction, and the heat capacity were measured to determine the microscopic origins of the spin-state transition and its evolution with temperature and magnetic field. Results from resistivity and structural measurements have also been taken into account to solve these puzzle. A combined analysis of the susceptibility and the thermal expansion leads to a consistent description of the above-mentioned physical properties of LaCoO3 in a two-level system, consisting of a singlet ground state and an triplet excited state of the Co(3+) ions. Partial substitution of La by Eu leads to chemical pressure in the unit cell. This modifies the crystal field splitting. The spin gap and the charge gap of La(1-x)Eu(x)CoO(3) are systematically shifted to higher energies, whereas the spin gap increases from about 180 K in LaCoO(3) to more than 2000 K in EuCoO(3) which is more than a factor of ten. The activation energy increases from ~ 1200 K to ~ 3400 K which is only a factor of three and the temperature of the metal-insulator transition shifts only moderately from 480 K to about 600 K. A similar effect can be caused by substituting the La(3+) ions by different rare earth ions. The thermal expansion data gives evidence that the uniaxial pressure dependence of the spin gap rises with decreasing ionic radius of the ion which is introduced at the La place. Another possibility to influence the physical properties of the undoped compound LaCoO(3) is the introduction of divalent ions like A = Ca, Sr, or Ba: La(1-x)A(x)CoO(3). Formally, the hole doping process causes an amount x of the formerly Co(3+) ions to change their valence and become Co(4+) ions. This leads to a significant change in the electric, magnetic, and structural properties of LaCoO(3). For Sr and Ba doping one finds that the system realizes a spin-glass phase with increasing x. Above x = 0.2 the system shows ferromagnetic order. The Ca series features no spin-glass phase but shows long-range ferromagnetic order even at low doping levels. It runs through a doping-induced structural phase transition which causes striking anomalies in the specific heat and the thermal-expansion data. The behaviour of the magnetically ordered systems with x >= 0.2 can be understood in terms of the double-exchange mechanism. The thermal-expansion data of all three series clearly indicates that neither the Co(3+) nor the Co(4+) ions feature spin-state transitions as a function of temperature.English
