Abstract

The rare-earth dicarbides (SE = Eu, Yb, Sm, Tb, Gd, Nd) were synthesised without oxides and the temperature-dependant phase behaviour was investigated through synchrotron radiation. At room temperature these compounds crystallize with the exception of EuC2 in the tetragonal CaC2-type structure (I4/mmm, Z = 2). A monoclinic phase, not yet known in the literature, was found for the Europiumdicarbide, which crystallizes in the ThC2-type structure (C2/c, Z = 4) at room temperature. For this Europium compound there is a phase transition into the tetragonal modification (I4/mmm, Z = 2) at 638 K and into the cubic high temperature modification (Fm-3m, Z = 4) at 648 K. Both are first order transitions. A temperature-dependant investigation of YbC2 shows a first order transition from the tetragonal modification into the high temperature modification (Fm-3m, Z = 4) at 1023 K, which is not yet known in the literature. Besides solid solutions of the compounds Sr1-xEuxC2 were obtained and analysed through synchrotron radiation. Therefor different composition ratios of Strontium and Europium were used (Sr : Eu = 10 : 1, 5 : 1, 3 : 1, 2 : 1, 1: 1). At room temperature the Strontium rich phases crysallize in the tetragonal CaC2-type structure, the Europium rich phases in the monoclinic ThC2-type structure. The compounds Sr0,91Eu0,09C2 and Sr0,5Eu0,5C2 were examined temperature-dependant through synchrotron radiation and compared to the temperature-dependant phase behaviour of SrC2 and EuC2. The valence state + 2 of the Ytterbium in the YbC2 compound was determined by magnetochemistry measurements. Because of the results of Moessbauer and magnetochemistry measurements a valence state of + 2 for the Europium in EuC2 is assumed as well. Besides EuC2 shows a strongly developed CMR-effect for measurements of the electrical resistance. Only a small effect on the valence state of the Europium in Europiumdicarbide at a pressure of 10 kbar was observed through measurements of magnetic susceptibilities and magnetism under increased pressure. Attempts to synthesise the ternary rare-earth carbides ASE(III)(C2)2 (A = alkaline metals) and EASE(II)(C2)2 (EA = alkaline-earth metals) failed.English
