Abstract

The present study deals with the synoptic and dynamic aspects of heat low developments associated with the penetration of an extratropical upper level trough into tropical West Africa. During the AMMA project (African Monsoon - Multidisciplinary Analysis), a large field campaign during the year 2006 took place in several West African countries. The collected data set is unique with respect to its diversity and its spatial and temporal density. Thus, this study is focusing to the year 2006 and the dry and the transition seasons are of special interest. Using a subjective identification method, 140 days with a tropical plume (TP) occurrence where identified during 2006 and grouped into 29 events. TPs are the most prominent feature of tropical-extratropical interactions and visible in infrared-satellite imagery. Three events were chosen for further, more detailed investigations. The first event (06 - 18 February 2006) is characterized by a heat low development over North Benin, West Niger and eastern Burkina Faso and heavy rains along the Guinea Coast. The second case (19 - 30 May 2006) occurred during the transition season from the dry to the wet conditions prior to the monsoon season. It is characterized by a well developed TP, visible in the satellite imagery, and a pronounced heat low development over Burkina Faso and Mali. The two heat low developments were investigated with an extended form of the pressure tendency equation (PTE). The investigations are based on the ERA-Interim and the AMMA-Reanalysis data set. The latter is available only for the second event during May. The AMMA data set contains in addition to the operationally archived parameters the diabatic heating rates. Thus, their impact on the surface pressure could be calculated directly. The comparison of the results produced with the different data sets suggests, that the calculation of the diabatic heating as the residuum of the other PTE-terms is meaningful, in case no heating rates are available. For both cases, the start of the heat low development is initiated by thermodynamically induced mass divergence over one or two days due to warm air advection, followed by dynamically induced mass divergence or convergence. The thermodynamic processes cause the pressure rise after reaching the pressure minimum. Thus, thermodynamic processes were again instrumental at the beginning of pressure tendencies. Cold air advection dominates the diabatic processes and the vertical motion and causes the horizontal contraction and thus the mass convergence. The third event was observed from 18 to 30 May 2006. During this period a sub-Saharan heat low moved from nearly 20°N northeastward to around 30°N. Additionally a mid level AEW (African easterly wave) and an upper level trough with an compact TP on its eastern flank were observed. At the near surface level and at the eastern side of the mid level AEW trough moist air was transported via an anticyclonic arc from the south over the Saharan region to the mediterranean coast of Morocco and Algeria and lifted up to 400 hPa. Thereby the prevailing Harmattan flow was interrupted over the Sahara and the northern Sahel. From the 22 May 2006 onwards, a lee cyclogenesis at the western side of the subtropical part of the TP was observed. The enhancing instability of the atmosphere due to upper level cold air advection and the ongoing moisture flux convergence ahead the trough in the mid troposphere cause moist convection and related precipitation under the cyclone and the TP over northwestern Morocco and Algeria during the following days. Starting 23 May onward the surface low retreats back south and weakens due to the low level cold air advection. This case shows the complexity of interaction mechanisms between the mid and lower tropospheric tropical and the upper level extratropical circulation and their observed characteristics during one single event. Until the time of writing, such diversity were not presented jet in the form of case studies. These results, regarding the investigations of the first two heat low developments with the pressure tendency equation, document an advance in the understanding of the mechanisms associated with the development of heat lows over West Africa. In particular, the extended formulation of the PTE and the obtained results for the two case studies represent a good perspective for further research.English
