Abstract
In the Nilotic and Ubangian languages expressions for cardinal directions have been created on the basis of a wide range of conceptual sources: primarily cosmological, geographical and atmospheric concepts. But also names of neighbouring ethnic groups and even historical events are used as such. Borrowing of naming systems, however, do not occur.

| In den nilotischen Sprachen und in den Ubangi-Sprachen wurden Ausdrücke für Himmelsrichtungen anhand sehr verschiedener konzeptueller Quellen geschaffen, vorwiegend kosmologischer, geografischer und atmosphärischer. Aber auch die Ethnonyme von Nachbarvölkern und selbst historische Ereignisse liegen den Begriffen zugrunde. Entlehnungen von Bezeichnungssysteme sind jedoch nicht belegt. | German |
